Layers of the Earth (Geochemical model)
Description
Layers of the Earth for teaching the internal structure of Earth (geochemical model)
This model contains five layers of the Earth from the geochemical model of the Earth. Each one has a braille tag with a number from 1 to 5, corresponding to:
1 - Crust and lithosphere
2 - Upper mantle
3 - Lower mantle
4 - Outer core
5 - Inner core
Both the upper mantle and the outer core have wrinkles to make them easier to recognize.
This model is at scale, meaning the layers have the same proportions as they do in reality.
The map modified with G. Projector to make the continents comes from Wikimedia Commons and it was created by user Crates (CC BY-SA 4.0):

Disclaimer: For some reason, making the url clickable breaks it, but I also cannot write it as plain text because the url contains underscores and that makes part of the url italic and also breaks it. In case it isn't fixed, you can find the original file and use license by searching "World map blank without borders" in Wikimedia Commons.
Printing instructions and tips
This model is meant to be ~20 cm wide. Printing it smaller or bigger risks making the braille illegible.
Due to its big size, it has to be printed in at least two steps. If you have a 26x26 cm bed size, you can print the files "EarthCrust and Upper Mantle" and "EarthLower Mantle and Both Core Layers". If your bed size is smaller, you can print each individual layer one by one by using the additional files.
Known issues
- The layers don't have a lot of spacing between them, so there's a possibility they don't fit very well.
- The pieces rotate easily and don't like to stay in place.
- It's hard to carry them around with one hand.
